The Prayer Diet Day 2
Weight Bias
Weight bias and stigma hurt and impact our ability to lose weight. Let's look at this problem.
Recall that The Prayer Diet wants to address the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical factors of weight loss, not just physical factors of diet and exercise. Please note this is important since there are many causes of obesity: emotional eating; prescription medication for other illness; hormone problems; genetic predisposition; and even food insecurity or poverty to list a few of the causes. Weight bias and discrimination against people who are obese can add to the problem of obesity. “The physical health outcomes of weight bias and stigma can include: Unhealthy weight control practices Binge-eating Avoidance of physical activity”
Doctors, nurses, teachers, employers are all guilty of unfairly judging people who are obese and viewing them as lazy and untidy with many other negative judgments. Overweight children and teens experience teasing from other children and teens as early as preschool. “Overall, as many as 63 percent of girls and 58 percent of boys report peer victimization.” Obese students with similar grades to other students are less likely to be accepted to a university. At work, obese individuals are less likely to be hired, earn lower salaries for the same job as non-obese individuals, less likely to be promoted. Doctors are especially likely to have negative views of obese individuals and this often results in these individuals not seeking medical care when they should.
This is a very destructive and hurtful practice that is a very common and accepted prejudice against obese people and does negatively impact ability to lose weight.
